As a Hip Hop aficionado, I love when a rappers butchers a beat mercilessly. Although the number of rap gladiators has dwindled over the years, there’s still some talented artist who make the art of emceeing look like meat locker practice. Virginia artist Zaiah Burkes is no exception. In his single “Back 2 The Basics,” Zaiah schools the new class of neophytes on how to emcee. Rhyming effortlessly over a vintage boom bap instrumental, Zaiah pulls no punches as he delivers hilarious, but equally venomous couplets down your ear canal. Needless to say, this emerging artist is someone you want to be on the lookout for. His single is released from his current mixtape “The Zaiah Burkes Story,” so if you liked “Back 2 The Basics,” you’ll definitely want to download the tape which can be downloaded from his website. I’m a 20-year old, hip hop artist and graphic designer for Jonesboro, Georgia.
I would greatly appreciate it if you would take the time to listen to my second music project, The Ides of March EP. The theme is based on the story of Julius Caesar, and the concept of duality. I chose this because the events that led up to his assassination are very relevant and are found in modern ideals. The anomalies of man and woman, humans versus the universe, pride and humility, faith and betrayal, are all themes represented in this project (whether directly addressed or subtle). Sound wise, the project is atmospheric, with synths and lots of phasing, but it still retains a hip-hop percussive.

Baton Rouge emcee Marcel P. Black engages in what he describes, “Proletariat Protest Music”, over Houston’s “That Purple Bastard’s” rock influenced Queen sampling, “I’m Mad”. “I’m Mad” is Marcel’s take on the Trayvon Martin situation, also serving as a call to action for people to take a stand against police brutality & senseless violence against people of color. “I’m Mad” is the first release from Marcel P. Black & That Purple Bastards “#CivilDisobediance” EP dropping this summer.

Dallas duo A.Dd+ are currently in the midst of their first national tour, opening up for indie favorite Black Milk, and although the guys will be out on the road until the end of March, Paris Pershun and Slim Gravy are keeping the music coming, this time with a song called “Can’t You See.” The song, produced by Nick Nack, will appear on the Austin DJ/producer’s forthcoming album, State Machine, which will be released in the coming weeks via Crowd Control Records.
